That doesn't mean that people are supposed to go to wearing boots and turtleneck sweaters, but it just starts to look a bit out of place (to me, at least) to be sporting colors that are clearly trappings of the summer season well into september and october. And white is one of those colors.
The same thing goes for fabrics. Linen is a summer fabric. Just like velvet or courdoroy isn't apropriate in the summer, summer fabrics don't work well in the fall and winter.

I agree with this... It's still really hot here in North Carolina, but by the time it's September, all the fall clothes have been in the stores for a month. Not wearing white is more like a transition between summer and fall. Some might argue that it's outdated, but it's not like a HUGE deal.
