as I've always understood it, Labor Day was the cutoff point because its the traditional end of the summer season.

That doesn't mean that people are supposed to go to wearing boots and turtleneck sweaters, but it just starts to look a bit out of place (to me, at least) to be sporting colors that are clearly trappings of the summer season well into september and october. And white is one of those colors.

The same thing goes for fabrics. Linen is a summer fabric. Just like velvet or courdoroy isn't apropriate in the summer, summer fabrics don't work well in the fall and winter.
