I'm born and bred yankee too, yet am in a chapter in the south. Here's my take on the "southern recruitment". So many women want to join a sorority and chapters can only take so many, therefor chapters must release women. All the chapters want the girls with good grades, activities and in some cases if you know girls in those chapters, they'll want you too. Which makes is very "cut throat" throughout the whole recruitment week. In the north, Greek Life isn't as big as in the south, so I don't think as many women go though. A lot of chapters in the south also need "recs" to join a sorority, meaning the pnm knows a member of that chapter...this also helps chapter release girls in the early rounds because 10-20 mins in a house isn't enough time to release a girl if she maybe doesn't fit with that chapter. In the north "recs" don't matter as much because not as many women go though so it might be easier for the chapter to really talk and get to know girls before any releases are made.
That's my take in a nutshell.
