Some of the sororities here do bid lists before Pref night, and of course make adjustments after Pref as needed. It helps eliminate some of the stress and lets the sisters just concentrate on making Pref as beautiful and meaningful as possible, since they aren't worrying about how they'll have to spend hours in MS afterwards. That way, by the time you get to the Pref parties, almost all of the work is done and you can just relax with the girls you hope to have as sisters.
