The Atkins diet is based on the Glucose Index, which is what diabetics use to monitor how their food intake affects their insulin levels. The science behind it is pretty dense and explained on the website and various places around the 'net, so I won't bother cluttering up the forum with details.
I can say that it works, though. My father has lost 50 pounds on it. No other wieght loss program worked for him. He was nearly 300 pounds and has early stage type II diabetes. When he learned about the Atkins/diabetes connection, he decided to give it a go, and it's been amazing to watch.
Did you know that Atkins makes low-carb bread and ice cream mix? It's nifty stuff, though expensive-- we're talking a $5 loaf of bread! But it's a godsend for my dad, who misses BLTs the most.
I myself have spent the last four months watching my caloric intake, limiting carbohydrates (especially sugar), and exercising like a mad woman. I've lost thirty-eight pounds and have twelve more to go to get to my goal weight. It's been hard, but it's so worth it.
Props to all you ladies for making the commitment for a lifestyle change. I'm there with you!
