HC I have been asked to give you the skinny on protein shakes
HC protein shakes work BEST when taken 1/2 hour to an hour after a weight training session
HC this is because you do not build muscle DURING strength training, you gain it afterwards when you're resting and muscle is repairing the minute tears you caused by lifting weights
HC that healing is when you build muscle
HC in order to maximize the amount of muscle built your body has to have protein available (for the amino acid content- that is what your body uses to build muscle)
HC that is all the technical stuff
Makin it easy-
1. buy a protein shake that is low in sugar and fat. It should be about 20g of protein to 100-130 calories.
If you can find a shake mix with l-glutamine that is the best, but those can be pricey so I generally just go for plain old protein.
2. There are lots of debates about which is better, I prefer WHEY PROTEIN. [technical jargon] It has the best amino acid profile [/tehnical jargon]
3. The best bang for your buck is at GNC if you have a gold card and buy during the first week of the month. Their tub is HUGE and good quality. It also tastes the least bad (none of them taste GOOD so be prepared to just drink your protein shakes fast). BE CAREFUL which one you pick up though, cheap folks JUST want whey protein, not whey protein with all the fancy vitamins- that costs 20 bucks more. Other quality brands that are expensive but are more impressive nutritionally are Nutritech and Met-RX. Met-RX also has ready to drink shakes that you can buy by the can. The chocolate flavor tastes like chocolate milk and can be put to good use at the gym when you don't want to sit there mixing powders in the ladies locker room!
4. Personal tip- mix your protein shakes with skim milk. They taste better for it and skim milk will add the least fat with the most flavor. As you get used to the taste wean yourself away from milk and just mix it with water (I went from skim to half skim/half water to just water).
5. Drink the shake after your workouts, 30- 60 minutes afterwards. If you're doing intensive cardio you might also think about having a piece of fruit or something to replace glycogen (vigorous cardio exercise burns that before burning fat, but it's all calories. If you don't replace that with carbs your body will use that expensive protein that you just drank instead, lol).
I hope this helps! They do say that six-packs are made in the kitchen and I found that to be 100% true. Changing my eating made the biggest difference in losing fat and gaining muscle (with constant exercise and weight training of course).
