My dad (a child of the 50's) was tied to the clothesline if his mother was outside in the garden or whatever. Apparently it was emotionally traumatic. He never used leashes on me or my sis, and thankfully never had to. Whenever he sees a kid in a harness or on a leash, he whistles "How Much Is That Doggie In the Window". I guess it's his way of dealing with it.
