Definitely go for reading the Silmarillian. It's such a great story, deals with creation and what not, a very interesting twist on things too.
It's also cool to get to see the shaping of this world and as improtant as the Ring and Sauron and all that seems, Sauron was only but a servant for Morgoth and a small story in the long sad history of Middle Earth.
It's very overwhelming.
The book tends to read like the Bible or a history book... and it's a bit slow at parts, but if you can get past that then it's an awesome story.
Can't wait for ROTK either... I just know I'm gonna ball my eyes out at a "certain point." Just reading the book the way Tolkien describes it gets me choaked up stilll sometimes.
