Sports Illustrated did an article a couple of years back with the top 10 strangest college mascots. My school was #2 (and I think still remains in that spot), behind the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs. I went to Oglethorpe University where we were the Stormy Petrels. Apparently a petrel was a seagull-like bird which had oily skin and sailors used to set them on fire and follow them as they flew through storms to find their way. Hence why they're extinct. Anyhow, the mascot we have looks like a seagull standing up with a puffed-up chest. I was a college cheerleader and there is nothing harder than that first season when you realize you sound like an idiot yelling "Go Stormy Petrels"! There's been talk of ESPN airing a baseball or basketball game between us and UCSC since we have the #1 and #2 strangest mascots. Would love to see that!
