I really do agree with you on this point. There can be very good discussion, but sometimes, you really are afraid of getting attacked and insulted. People pull superiority stances and you just give up....
If you make a debate personal (start saying things like "Go back to school" or "You're being rude"), you lose the flow and don't want to continue.
A debate/discussion should stay on topic, and not about the person/people debating it.
