well, never thought I'd find this in this thread!
as an American who spends most of the year in Canada for school, I totally understand everything said in that quote...
Before I went there, I might have thought the same thing as you guys, but seeing how things really are there, I know differently. If you haven't lived in Canada, you wouldn't know that, so there's no reason to get on his case when you haven't seen life from the other perspective.
I'm not saying this with any malicious intent, I'm just telling it like it is after having lived on both sides.
And back to the *real* subject of this thread... grades really aren't stressed all that much in my chapter. There is a minimum average (I'm not even totally sure what it is), but we don't submit them to the school and compete against the other groups, like groups at other schools seem to.
