I missed the show but it just sounds desperate and stupid. I mean what kind of person would leave the decision of who they're going to marry up to their best friends and risk making a mistake and rushing into things and possibly get divorced later. And furthermore, risk the chance that the man is in it ONLY for the money and they stay together for a year and he divorces her after the year mark is up? It just doesn't sit right with me.
I took this woman's studies class and our first chapter was about women's rights in foreign countries and dowries. In some countries the families are so poor that the dowry is like a gift to the groom's family for 'taking the bride off her family's hands' (especially since women are not valued as much and an unmarried woman would be a burdon). Furthermore the FAMILY usually gets the money for their businesses, not the newlywed couple. If a woman dishonors the family's wishes and does something they deem as an embarassement to their family name the brothers (often) can go ahead and kill her (it's called honor killing). They do this often in public and don't suffer any reprocutions from it.
Basically (sorry for the tangent) this sort of show reminds me of the things I learned (even though our society isn't as bad as what I described). It's giving the impression that women have a monitary value and to be wed off they have to be worth $$$$ something. The only difference here is that she (or her friends) get to choose instead of someone forcing her to marry someone. But still, the man could simply marry (as I said above) for the money and divorce her...because essentially she's not winning anything (unless they have a prenup with a clause about the winning).
