>>> SISTERFRIENDS: Which founder(s) of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority do you find most appealing and why?
I'll say Ms. Lucy Diggs Slowe would be the Founder I find most appealing because she was described as such a hard worker who supported herself through school like I've done. Although I have a very supportive family, I've worked all but one year while I was in school (high school-thru-law school). So I feel like I can relate to her lifestyle in terms of time management to balance classes, work and other activities.
Also as the first President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority I see her as really being a 'take charge' person whom her sorority sisters respected especially Ethel Hedgeman. Having been the President of Student Orgs. I know its a rewarding yet difficult position to be in, so I feel like I relate to her on that level as well by going above and beyond the ordinary academic routine by taking on leadership roles.
Another thing that stands out is the respect she garnered throughout her career, while in the DC Public school and especially at Howard Univ. as the Women's Dean. As stunning the AKA stained glass window is, the window dedicated to Ms. Lucy Diggs Slowe's is equally amazing! It really lets you know just how much her life affected others. I want to leave a mark on the lives of others the way in which she did. (Wouldn't mind a window my self..lol) But her ability to reach children, college students as well as her colleagues which in an of itself is a huge accomplishment is inspiring.
