Big difference in what 'smacks' (fourth classmen) have to go through... basic cadet training, then the academic year before becoming 'recognized' (the cadet equivalent to initiation, where the strict discipline is relaxed and lowerclass members can address the upperclass members a little more informally).
From what I've read in the Rumormill, the first three or four days of inprocessing is relaxed; on the fourth day the Beast cadre opens up a can of whoopass on the new basics.
