Guess I will speak up...
As a neo (today is my 3 month AKAversary), I would like to share the following.
My perspective about Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has not changed in re: to the ideals and beliefs of the organization. Much of what I "thought" about the sorority before I became a member was confirmed once I was initiated and began to work in my chapter. I believe firmly in the ideals that are entwined in our great history. But I also knew (and respected) the "work" as well. Seeing the business up close was something I could not even imagine before becoming a member. Now that I am a member, my perception has not changed.
I will say that there are some aspects of the "sisterhood" that I had perceived differently before I became a member. But I was warned about them beforehand and seeing certain things unfold before me added further "proof". I have always lived by this mantra (even before becoming a member)-- people are people and women are women. As long as I stick to that, I will continue to be an active, hard-working, and loyal soror. In that regard, my view from the outside was definitely not the same as my view on the inside.
I love Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and all she represents. Her goals and programming touch at the heart of the issues that are of most concern to our communities. I love my sisterhood. I have had the opportunuity to meet kind, loving, wonderful, accomplished women from all walks of life whom I now can call MY sorors!! I can now look in the eyes of my life long friends and share an even deeper, more special bond with them-- the bond of being an Alpha Kappa Alpha woman.
Not without ups and downs, as with anything in life, in the end Alpha Kappa Alpha is all that I expected it to be and more.
