Okay, I'm not sure why I'm sharing this but...

When I was a senior in college, I was one of five finalists for Sorority Woman of the Year for our school. This being a fairly new award, they hadn't ironed out the details just yet. Oh, we five had already survived two rounds, going from the original 35 to 15 to five finalists.

The announcement was being made at the last event prior to the Greek Week Formal, in an auditorium. I was sitting with my sorority sisters, and the two fraternities we were working with for Greek Week - roughly 200 some people - all of whom were supporting me for this award.

My real first name was fairly uncommon at the time, and I NEVER had a class with another woman with my name in any other class. My name also has a natural nickname, which I have NEVER allowed someone to call me.

So, we're all sitting towards the front & side in this huge auditorium, anticipation mounting. The Greek Advisor starts making the announcements, and, without naming the five nominees, says "The winner of the Greek Woman of the Year is (My First Name)..." and as one body, all of the people around me start screaming and yelling and cheering and clapping - until he continued, "...Jones."

Jones is not my last name. That rat who won had CONSISTANTLY used the nickname all through college, and NO ONE had even connected it to her at first! I slunk out of that auditorium so quickly, and ran back to my house, where I hid for about a week...
