There are lots of opportunities (educational, cultural, shopping, etc) available in places like NYC or Boston that you just can't get elsewhere, and you don't need a car to get around, so the kids don't need to book Mom's Taxi to visit their friends. On the other hand, in the 'burbs you can have a real live backyard, it's quiet, and usually the crime rate is a lot lower.

I think the ideal situation is what I grew up with... living in the 'burbs, but within commuting distance of a major city, so you can go in for a day and take advantage of all the city has to offer.
