She read his book and loved it, so she picked it as her "Book of the Month." The author was really mad because he thought his book was too "highbrow" for Oprah's readers and that they wouldn't get it
. . . basically, he was a complete jerk about it and wouldn't let her use it as her book pick. He said some rude things about Oprah and the book club in the press, too. I think Oprah was offended by that, and that was one of the reasons she decided to end the book club.
