My knowledge of Satanism is pretty sketchy, since I've never known anybody who did it, let alone did it myself. But the basic idea I get is that they consider Satan a role model, but don't worship him, per se. Essentially, they believe that what most people consider "sinning" is actually good because it makes them feel good (gluttony, lust, whatever). They don't worship Satan so much as they worship
themselves. It's basically set of beliefs based on hedonism. They relate to Satan because they decide to put themselves before God just as Satan did.
It's actually got nothing to do with ritual animal sacrifice or anything like that, and as far as I know it's got little to do with actually worshipping Satan. Sure, it seems like it's pretty out there, but I think most people have a somewhat misguided conception of it.
At any rate, Satanism could benefit from a name change.
