The Roman Catholic Church has
never taught that the pope, even as a man, is infallible. What the Church has taught is that when the Pope, by virtue of his office and in collegiality with his brother bishops, speaks or teaches regarding a matter of faith or doctrine, the Holy Spirit will protect him from speaking or teaching erroneously. The reason for this is so that the Church will not be led astray.
