While I do agree that you cannot judge an entire group by the actions of individual members, I have to disagree about pettiness decreasing with maturity.
Four years ago, my chapter participated in a local black heritage parade. Some of us younger sorors, all decked out in para, came across some older members of "xyz" sorority, and spoke to these ladies. On top of the relatively nasty looks we got, they acted like it hurt them to open their mouths to say hello. These women were in their 40's and 50's (at least).
Also, there were one or two "seasoned" sorors in my former chapter who were practically obsessed with showing up the "xyz's" with every event/activity that we did. You WOULD think that people would outgrow this kind of insanity as they age, but I guess that some just don't get it.
