Eclipse, you have a great point. In '81, you saw all types of hair on sistahs, even in San Diego (6% black). I started wearing a modified jheri because I didn't want my Mom or anyone coming near me with a straightening comb.

My sister, a stylist for nearly 30 years, always made sure that I didn't overdo it with the activator.
