Soror, I will say a prayer for this soror and her husband. My father had a stroke before Thanksgiving in 1990. He lived another four years after.
Sometimes it does seem as though negative things happen during the holiday season. We should all remember that illnesses don't know the difference between young and old. I'm 26 yrs old and my doctor placed me on medication because my blood pressure has been elevated over a period of months. I would have never known if I didn't get regular check-ups.
It is so important to take care of ourselves, and visit the doctor even if we feel fine. It is even more important if you have a family history of any disease or illness that could be prevented or treated early on.
One of my co-workers was diagnosed with hypertension at 25 and was on medication until she was 30. She now has it under control and is about to have her first child. She is a registered dietician who always got a lot of exercise and watched her diet.
As African-Americans or Black people (depending on which you prefer), we have a higher risk of certain illnesses than other groups of people. I urge everyone to stay in tune with their bodies.
