University of North Texas suspends fraternity for hazing
Associated Press

DENTON -- The University of North Texas today suspended a fraternity for hazing, officials said.

The nine-month suspension of UNT's Alpha Phi Alpha chapter also was imposed by the fraternity's national headquarters, which conducted a separate investigation after a student reported hazing, officials said. Details of the hazing were not disclosed.

The chapter's fraternity members will not be allowed to do fund raising or other activities until February. Members must perform at least 50 hours of community service before spring 2004, officials said.

Once the suspension is lifted, the fraternity will remain on probation for a year, and members must become involved in the university's anti-hazing coalition.

Alpha Phi Alpha is the fifth fraternity suspended at UNT in the past three years for hazing, alcohol or disorderly conduct violations.
