If a deal is "iffy" due to credit concerns, or if the salesperson is having difficulty talking someone into buying the car, they allow you to "borrow" it - but you do sign documents that you are responsible, AND, what charges are accrued on a daily basis that YOU are responsible for should you return the car, or financing fall through, etc....they still get some money out of you, if at all possible.
