Before going to see the movie, I read an article where the real-life Sunshine (I can't remember his real name) said he was satisfied with the overall accuracy of the film. He said there were "elements of Hollywood" included in the film, but that was expected. He did mention that his California hippie boy character was embellished a bit.

Most "based on a true story" movies I've seen do tend to add things here and there for entertain purposes. Honestly, I don't know what the exact fashion or style was in 1971. I don't think we should be so concerned about the character's clothing or 1990's injected dialogue that we lose sight of the message and the story.
