My father attended ASU in the early 70's. There were white students then without "minority scholarships." My father didn't receive any kind of scholarship, he had to work part-time to pay for his education. I read in one of the alumni newsletters that ASU is promoting this "minority" scholarship to get more money from the Alabamian government. Currently (I'm not sure if it's complete) AUM (Auburn Univeristy in Montgomery) is building or expanding their campus. ASU is afraid that they will lose more students to AUM. Also, AUM receives more state funds because they are more diverse than ASU. This is ridiculous to me because many white people don't want to attend a college where they will be the minority. I believe that is why the standards for the "minority" scholarship is ridiculously low, IMHO. I'm all for diversity, but having a 2.0 for a free ride in college is sad. I had a 3.9 and I attend a predominantly white institution -- no scholarship for me.
