When I was in college, it was the same way. In my dorm we were ordering shirts for our floor's football team. The guy said we need to pay $5 now so I'm thinking that's pretty inexpensive for a sport's jersey. A week later he needed $35 more.
That was a lot of money for me at the time. Plus they never even let me play. It sucks to be in college and not rich.
Fundraising and costco are good ideas. You can have a bake sale. Those were pretty successful. Good luck!
