Thumbs down

I just wanted to comment on the Supreme Court's decision to ban homosexuals from being troop leaders. In my opinion, this is a travesty. From what I understand, this decision was not made out of fear that homosexuals are more likely to be pedophiles and act inappropriatley with the young boys. This decision was made because the Boy Scouts feel that homosexuals are not good role models for impressionable young men. I just don't agree. I don't think that one's sexual preference has anything to do with one's ability to mold a child into an upright, law-abiding citizen. What about the heterosexual troop leader who goes home and beats his wife? Or the one who snorts a vial of cocaine before the camping trip? Or what about the one who is laundering money from his place of employment? Are these men better suited to act as role models just because they choose to have sex with women? I think not.

I do not condone homosexuality, but when the highest law of the land sides with such a discriminatory practice, I get nervous. As black people, we know discrimination first hand, and this just makes me wonder where it will end. Who are they to deem who is fit to serve as a role model? When they start demeaning their own, I think we need to keep our eyes and ears open and not sleep on what it means to NOT be a white, heterosexual male in this country.
