Actually, the Miss USA and Miss America pageants are totally different things. There are a number of differences between them, such as the fact that Miss USA does not have a talent competition (I think) and instead counts the interview for more of the total score. The USA and America pageants are actually the uppermost categories (well, second to uppermost for the Miss USA pageant, which feeds into the Miss Universe pageant) in two completely different pageant systems, and usually a girl who does competitions will pick one system and stick with it -- you usually don't see a girl competing for Miss USA AND Miss America, for example.

You're right, the Miss America pageant is in September. But the Miss USA pageant is next week. The Miss Universe pageant airs in May, I think.

Another bit of pageant trivia: individual state winners in the Miss America pageant are referred to as "Miss [insert name of state here]" but those in the Miss USA pageant are referred to as Miss [insert name of state here]-USA." For example, "Miss Wisconsin" is not the same thing as "Miss Wisconsin-USA."
