Men are more open to new friendships than women are. Most women have a few close friends with whom they have been friends for a very long time. Men, on the other hand, seem to be more open to having friendships with a wide variety of people.
I think that one of the main reasons for this is that women tend to have more trust issues than men do. Women are more wary of who they spend time with. There are plenty of people who we'll talk to while we're at work, school, or volunteering, but we don't really let the relationship develop outside of those boundaries. Why? Because "I don't know her like that." Many women will sacrifice a potentially fulfilling friendship to avoid being hurt.
