I don't think the 3 diamonds has any significance. I think it's just a "style" -- kind of like the tiffany diamond one.
I had 2 maids of honor... one was a childhood friend and the other an Alpha Gam. Since I was without my own badge (had lost it at a funeral I attended earlier in the year somewhere between the car and the service site), she allowed me to "borrow" hers for my wedding day. I made all of my sisters (9 out of the 10 bridesmaids were Alpha Gams) cry when she tried to find a place to pin it out of sight, and I told her to pin it on the outside where everyone can see it -- right over my heart
