I definitely do agree that MTV controls much of what we see, and I have no doubt that they encourage drama -- but I doubt most of these groups would agree to go along with this if it meant that they didn't get to pick their own members, run things their own way, etc. Even though they are willing to go on television, they're still real organizations who want the best for themselves, and if MTV was allowed to pick their pledges for them, I doubt they'd sign the contract.
The truth is that there are real groups out there that haze, or have claim they don't but have definitions of hazing which differ from those of national groups. If MTV wants to show hazing, it doesn't have to make this stuff up -- they just have to find the right groups to film.
National offices instructed their chapters not to do the show because they knew MTV would edit it in a less-than-positive way, not because they thought that MTV would FORCE their chapters to start hazing.
