What a great thread!
I transferred to my university as a sophomore and I didn't know a soul on campus. I thought that rush would be a great way to meet other girls with similar interests as mine.
When I walked into the rush orientation, I met the Alpha Gams. They looked so together and so friendly, I couldn't wait to learn more about them.
As rush week progressed, I knew that AGD was where I HAD to be. I saw lots of diversity. They were smart, ambitious, funny, friendly, classy, knew how to have a good time. They weren't there for the parties or the boys. They were there for EACH OTHER. These were girls that I would be proud to introduce as my sisters. (Oh, damn! getting misty eyed now.) On pref night, when the sisters recited the Purpose, I got chills up my spine. The Purpose was MY life mission statement, only said more eloquently than I could ever imagine. That is when I knew that I was born an Alpha Gamma Delta--I just didn't know it until then.
Funny story. I was Panhellenic President my last year as an active. During formal rush, there was one rushee who was having some trouble with her pref card--she couldn't decide which sorority to put first. I didn't know which ones she had visited, but I soothed her, squeezed her hand, hugged her and told her to go to the place where she felt at home.
On Bid Day, when I could finally reveal my affiliation and rejoin my sisters, I was thrilled to see that same rushee as our pledge! She later told me, "I was torn about which sorority to put first. Then you sat and talked with me and you squeezed my hand. That's how I knew that you were an Alpha Gamma Delta. Only the AGDs were sweet like that. I knew I had to be an AGD."
Remembering things like that make me proud to be an Alpha Gam!
