As for the 'ugly' male musicians. . .
are we forgetting Jimmy Page(who is sexy as hell), Jon Bon Jovi, the Beatles(Ringo was beautiful), and the list goes on? those weren't ugly male musicians. it's just that at the time. . .besides, the Jets, the teen market was missing something. and NKOTB was it.
and not to knock anything. . .but it did seem to be whoever was the popular boy band. . .every GUY was sporting their look.
led zepplin and van halen hairdos. . .
the mullet didn't just appear on the heads of rednecks. . .billy ray cyrus and KENNY CHESNEY were sporting those bad boys too.
and JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE started the whole curly mass of hair on the top of your head. . .and now, i can't look at one fraternity around this area where there aren't some abercrombie, curly afro frat boys. . .

So, NEW KIDS didn't spoil anything for male musicians. If anything, they gave them hope that 'yes, you can be hot as hell and still make beautiful music. . .'
