I have no objection to universal service in peacetime either, but so far the 'volunteer' armed forces concept has worked well in the past 30 or so years. Israel has been on a combat footing practically since they became a country; when you're surrounded by neighbors that want nothing more that to wipe you off the map it's nothing unusual to see universal service and long periods in reserve status.

On the other hand, I think it will be a cold day in Hell before there is ever a draft in the United States again, simply because it would be a political hot potato.
Not that it isn't possible if there should be a protracted ground war somewhere -- and I mean really long.
Still, there are enough voters still around who remember the last draft. It wasn't much fun, and it was unfair to lower income and less educated young men.
Many scoffed at the idea of an "all volunteer" military -- but it has worked pretty darned well.
