I think the biggest concern to me is that some of these groups just take what they hear, think that is all there is, and try to create their own org out of it. They have the media and thier crazy depiction of greeks nad movies about hazing with these images of being on line and sometimes war stories fomr older friends and family. They take all that and think they know what they are doing with no real context. No understanding of the point of pledgng (to create a bond, not to torture some one into the org) and a lack of understanding about the goals and service committments of the orgs. they seek to emmulate. And some of them haze like crazy.
I have also encountered some who are led by advisors who are in an NPHC org. and that is where the striking similarity comes from. Some of the info they get had to come from someone, right? At one of oour local high schools, the cheerleading advisors, a member of a NPHC Sorority that will will remain nameless, decided that they were going to have to pledge the squad, unbeknownst to the administration or the parents. They are thier own little click in the image of Sorority but that is not appropriate to me, for a school sanctioned extra curricular ativity. Not quite the same of these orgs. who founded themselves but the influence is very evident.
I have seen or heard of a few that more resemble the mentoring groups various orgs have with a more serious focus on commity serice and academics but some are something else!
