If you go to localsororities site, there's a page on Councils and Organizations. I think the general idea is great, but I think I would prefer the idea of a federation of local sororities--take it back to the idea of the difference between the Constitution and the Articles Confederation. I have some reservation with using the overstructure even remotely as a top down structure. For instance, I would never want any overstructure dictating academic rules for my local. Requiring a certain GPA and study hours and such sounds like a nice idea--standards are important, but every girl in my sorority has a full tuition scholarship, and would get kicked out of school if her GPA dropped below a 2.0 (average graduating GPA 2.7). It doesn't sound great, but getting C's and D's and for some, even an F is common at my school. We already spend Friday nights and Saturday nights studying--my place of greatest frequency on any given Sunday night is in the lab--study hours would only mess up our own rigourous study schedules and raising the GPA requirement would put many of our girls on probation at some point or another. Basically--grades at my school don't reflect knowledge and effort relative to the real world. Standards at one school might numerically differ, but functionally be equivalent. I realize the example I quoted is extreme and maybe even irrelevant but I'm sure there are other locals with less drastic examples but just as strong sentiments and concerns for maintaining sovereignty. While we wouldn't want anyone telling us how manage ourselves---especially academically, we would love having the opportunity to share ideas on how to go about doing something organizationally. Semantics and reservations aside, I think in addition to what it could do with support for locals currently in school is perhaps set up a structure for alumni--I love being a local and with my letters, but I have to admit, as a senior, graduating in a few short months--I'm a little envious that you can travel al over the place and find a DZ alumni chapter, for example, and they still get to do stuff together with sisters from all over the place. I'm really interested in hearing more on what everyone is thinking about an over structure, so I'll keep posted.
