I'm so sorry.
I was laid off myself a few months ago. I did go on unemployment - it's not really a handout, it's meant to tide you over until you find work (and you do have to be actively seeking work, not just sitting on your butt) - but, yes, they did treat me like dirt, and they use any excuse to put a stop on your check.
At least in Connecticut you can file by phone.
