Most NIC groups outlawed little sister groups on the basis that it was taking away from fraternity programming. They had a separate pledge program, initiation ceremony, and there were little sister-related offices for the brothers. Your reference to "getting letters" was what sounded like little sisters to me. It might be different at your school though. We are not allowed to have more than one official sweetheart per fraternity or sorority at one time, and a different one is chosen each year.
FWIW, I have no problem with little sisters, but it's one of those things that depending on the national you have to be VERY careful with nowadays.
