This didn't happen to me, but to my husband...
Back in the mid 90s my husband worked for a company that required that he travel internationally. He was in Geneva Switerland waiting for a train to Lausaunne (sp?). Since he only speaks English he was just reading as he was waiting. After a few minutes a man (Black American as well) came up and started a conversation with him. Evidently 6 ft 2 Black men are a bit unusual in Geneva!
Anyway, they do the regular, where are you from, where are you going, etc. When the man mentioned where he was from, the conversation went like this:
husband said "You're from _____That close to my wife's hometown.
Man: Where's she from?
Husband: She's from ___________
Man: Really? I went to college there!
Husband: Really? Her parents still live there and went to the same college. Their names are _______
Man: Get outta here!
Turns out the guy knew my dad really well!!
