As a member, I wouldn't mind a bit if someone from the past called me up and asked me to assist them with AI. I guess the caveat here is that it would have to be the 'right' person as I wouldn't want to help anyone who had no intention of participating or volunteering. I say, if you know someone from the group you are interested in, don't be afraid to make contact and ask for assistance.
