I think joint gifts are okay at first, but once you get to know them as individuals, I think you should go for more personalized individual gifts.
It doesn't matter as long as it's thoughtful...
And, James, I agree that the regifting is usually not a thoughtful action. I think it's more something you do for an office secret santa than someone you are close to.
