Kappa Sigma claims its roots in a secret fraternal society established by Manuel Chrysoloras in 1400 at the University of Bologna, where some of Kappa Sigma's founders studied for a time. Reputedly, much of Kappa Sigma's secret work is derived from these Bolognese roots. Kappa Sigma's open motto -- Bononia Docet, "Bologna teaches" -- refers to this history, as do the fraternity's colors: scarlet, white and emerald green (derived from the Italian flag).
