I can honestly say I hardly watch BET, and am very curious of what there defenition of "Black Starpower" is. However I have caught Cita's World a few times, and I don't find it offensive for several reasons. Is she ghetto? Sure. I she loud and raunchy? Sure. Do I know of people like her? Of course. Sometimes we have to stop believing that every single African-American or (virtual African-American) is the spokesperson for the black race. Do other ethnic groups see Cita and make assumptions about African-Americans? I am sure some do. I saw the interview on Nightline, and thought the woman who portrayed Cita had some good points. Why should Blacks always be concerned about what others think? Don't we have enough issues to resolve? There are atleast 5-10 media related issues that are way more harmful than Cita, and thats just media issues! I suppose people feel that the fact that BET choose to put a "ghetto fabulous" character on television, rather than perhaps a more passive character is poor judgement. Why must any exposure to the world be wasted on a character such as Cita? I think that perhaps BET has needed a makeover for some time. I am not like Cita, but I can be if you catch me at the right time. I am educated, well spoken and realize I am a minority in my race, I had a professor in college who put things in prospective for me. You have to remember most of the people on Greekchat, at our schools, jobs and circles are like us, educated. As a minority surrounded with other minorities achieveing the same goals as yourself you can loose touch with how the rest of the world is living. Your college experiences and your careers are a small fraction of how America lives and thinks, so what is offensive and crude to us may be humorous and reality to others. This is evident in how my students talk and relate to the world and even many of their parents as well. My collegues sound normal to me, but we are all college educated, and represent a small part of the nation. Do you need a degree to recognize crudness and to be offened by Cita? Of course not! However by living in the world you live, when you realize how others view the world it can be a shock. Money and education are two of he greatest separators of social class. Can the average billionare really relate to my needs? Maybe, but probably not. So can someone with a no vast amount of knowledge and exposure to things other than the ghetto and TV really relate to you? Just my thoughts.
