The island is Hispaniola. 'Hispanic' originates from the Anglicized word for Spain for those whose primary language is Spanish, though 'Latino' is the term used by most Spanish-speaking people in Central and South America.
I'm part-Venezuelan and Noo Yawk Irish and speak Spanish fluently (though I occasionally get lost trying to figure out Mexican Spanish!

). Though by living my youth in Miami I've picked up enough Cuban slang and mannerisms to thoroughly confuse things anyway.
