Yes, I know I'm living in a dream world, but if there was more time or personnel allowed for academic advising early on there'd be a lot less "I can't graduate without this class and it won't be offered again for three semesters!" garbage.

Hey, you're not living in a dream world. Part of the reason I love my college is because of the great experience I've had with my freshman advisor (who is now my concentration advisor and my thesis supervisor). Most of my friends (unless they are in very large, popular majors) have similar relationships with their advisors. During our freshman and sophomore years, we were required to meet with our advisors EVERYTIME we added, dropped, or changed grading options for a course, so we could be advised on how it would impact our future plans (and not just for graduation--that included study abroad, double-majors, internships, and leaves). Maybe it's something that happens at a small school.
