Pikes vs Pi Kaps
Pi Kappa Alpha has several chapters in South Carolina dating from the 1800s, but has never had one at College of Charleston. PiKA was founded at the University of Virginia in 1968 by six men, three of whom were Confederate veterans.
I've never heard that we had any connection to Pi Kappa Phi, but it was not unusual among fraternities that such things happened. Sigma Chi was founded by men who broke away from (I think) Phi Delta Theta. I believe Brothers of DKE founded several national fraternities. It's no unheard-of that pledges from a fraternity would break away to found their own.
