Affiliation is not something I really care about... Whereas I sometimes give my girlfriend a hard time about not being in a sorority I could really care less. It's just more of a connection thing. You either have it... or you don't. On the other hand there is the added benefit of the social scene that comes with the letters. But it's just one small part to a larger picture.
