Phi Delta Theta

Describe your badge and new member pin

The Phi Delta Theta badge was first made in 1849. It consisted of a flat gold shield with a scroll in the lower part bearing the Greek letters Phi Delta Theta, and an eye in the upper portion. Beginning in 1866, a sword attached to the shield was commonly worn, but the attachment was not officially a part of the badge until it was formally adopted by the Convention of 1871. The badge, except as to size and ornamentation, has not been changed since then. The badge is made of gold or platinum, and consists of a shield, with a scroll bearing the letters of Phi Delta Theta over the fesse and nonbril points, an eye over the honor point, and a sword attached by a chain from the sinister chief point to the hilt. The badge may be jeweled, and the scroll may be enameled in white and the eye in black. The sword shall always be worn with the shield, and both may be made in one piece. Every member shall wear the badge at all times appropriate. The proper place for it is over the heart rather than on the coat lapel. The code provides that only initiated members of the Fraternity, their mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, or fiancées should wear the badge.


New Member pin
The first Phikeia button was adopted in 1894 and was the first pledge button to be used by any fraternity. The present badge pin was designed in 1900. It is a square with rounded corners with a white diagonal bar across it bearing the Greek word phikeia. Above and below the bars are two blue fields with three gold stars in each field.

Where can you wear your badge(does it have to be over the heart, is a suit jacket ok or does it have to be on the blouse/shirt, if you're wearing other pins (like an Order of Omega pin) do they have to be below your badge, etc)?

The proper place for it is over the heart rather than on the coat lapel. All other membership pins should be under and to the left of the badge.

Do you require new members to wear their pins at all times?
No. But they may if they so wish.

Can you attach anything to your badge? (chapter guard, etc)
Yes, chapter guards could be used, but it is not a common practice.

Can you use a badge buddy?
I have no idea what that is...but I would guess no.

Can you make your badge into a pendant or ring?
nope...but in the past mothers, daughters, fiances, qives may have worn it as some type of ornamental jewerlry. I have seen pictures of it as a stick pin, necklace, and even ring.

What other official jewelry does your GLO have? (president's ring, award pins, mother's/father's pins, sweetheart pins, etc)

Our General Council President is invested in the President's badge which is just AMAZING. It consists of a large gold version of our coat-of-arms with the fraternity badge with pearls imposed on top....it is a beautiful thing...if I can find pics (I have some at home...but not here at work) I will post them if I get a chance.

We have a ring featuring the coat of arms that members can buy. We also have a ring that features the shield portion of our badge that you can also purchase, as well as rings with the greek letters on them.
